A Night at the Vid

When in college, I spent a great deal of time at the Vid. It used to be a small, smoke-filled space with a few pool tables, a hoop shot game, and the greatest bathroom graffiti ever (“I can’t believe Sting is that guy from the Police.” Once you got the nod from Mike, you knew you were golden. (Years after moving away, I would still get the nod.)

Since I’ve left, walls have been torn down and the space expanded, making it more of a “college bro” bar. Ughh. It’s definitely not the same Vid.

I can’t even count how many nights were spent there closing it down over pitchers of Amber Bock and games of darts. Or games of “tell elaborate lies to old men and see what happens.” (Oops.)

Inside Assembly Hall

When I was in college, I worked all four years for the athletic department’s apparel company. This meant having more access to the stadium and Assembly Hall than other students would. I mostly worked the busy games, but would also occasionally work shifts in the warehouse or store within Assembly Hall.

Sure I got some pretty good shots when I was working the games, as our stands would be dead during the games so we were allowed to watch. (I’d say my seats were pretty good–we got to stand on the floor.) But these pictures I took during the late fall, once the stadium had emptied following an early season game, are some of my favorites.

I took these sometimes during the fall of 2003.

Ghosts and the Union

I’ve always been obsessed with ghost stories. I still get excited at the prospect of hearing a new one, and if it’s someone’s personal story it is guaranteed I will be listening to every word.

There were always rumors the Memorial Union at Indiana University was haunted. Classmates would tell of a little boy, somewhat transparent, showing up in their pictures. Or weird noises. Or mysterious pathways (some of which I explored myself).

I never caught a real ghost on film. But that didn’t mean I didn’t try. And when I still caught no ghosts, I made them. Ahhh the early days of photography and double exposures/slow shutter speeds.

This was the stairway where the ghost of the boy was said to appear. Not for me.

Reservoir Days

Prints from slides are expensive. At one point in my life I knew this and chose against having prints made from the rolls of slide film I shot during the first two weeks of my color photo class in college. Slides do not fit through my scanner, however, which put me in the situation where I would either just have these slides forever or have to pay to turn them into prints or digital copies. And then I once more forgot slides were expensive until I went to pick them up (however not as expensive as dry cleaning–I’d recommend not doing a year’s worth at once).

$56 later I had in hand prints from three archival book sheets of slides I deemed worthy of printing out. Yuck.

Thank God I did not print them all.

Sadly, these look so much better as slides. And the wearing of my scanner (I guess my usage is heavier than most) doesn’t do much for them either . . .

I shot these in college during a bright, early September day down by the reservoir and the woods surrounding it. It was one of the first times I met Andrew and the first time doing a photo project with Adria living in the same town. I remember how my photo instructor had just “lectured” on the golden hour the week before and it was the first time I experienced that time with that knowledge.

I recently had an “A ha!” moment when it comes to my backlog/archive of photos (aka my photo hoarding). Starting today, Fridays will be my “post old photos and hopefully do so in a coherent manner” day. You’re welcome (for not overindulging myself and posting some every day).

Flashback Friday

Lately, I’ve sucked with keeping up with this blog.  Or blogs in general.  It’s Saturday morning, I’m lazy yet alert, and it seems to be a good time to update.  So, without further ado, I bring you a Flashback Friday errr . . . Saturday!  Interesting because August is always such a transitory time.
