Pathways.

I have been thinking a lot about careers and how/why people end up in the ones they have.  Some people have followed paths they established for themselves long ago, while others end up doing something they would have never thought they would.

I want to know:  What’s your story?  How did you get where you are today?

Boredom?  Guts?  Uncovering of secret talents?  Serendipity?  Strategy?

Tell me . . . I want to know!

Meh. My Strong Interest Inventory indicates that my responses are far statistically “different” then what the average accountant.

I decided to do this whole accountancy thing two summers ago. The basic thought I had, standing in a field in 100 degree heat making 8 dollars an hour, was “if i hate my job, I might as well get paid well”… and as it turns out that I have a knack for accounting (and enjoy it).

It helped that the estimated 20K debt for college could be paid off in a full year of work as well (ie my degree brings 25K increase in average salary from what I was making).

Plus the degree retains large amounts of flexibility. Some accountants never actually “account” for anything after they graduate.

So there you have it, a logical choice for someone who didn’t know what they wanted to do, but wanted more money.
